DJ ALSPIN + DJ Phil Anthony on the wheels of steels

“Our first efforts are focusing on a rural, subsistence-farming town named Colonia Libertad, located in NW Costa Rica. Here, school age children leave for school as the sun is rising. The nearest high school consists of four posts supporting a tin roof. Walls still are not affordable. To reach the more equipped high school in La Fortuna, students will spend 4 hours a day on a bus, and eight hours in classes. To graduate from high school, students must pass a test called the Bachillerato. Last year, four students from Colonia Libertad passed the test. Only one of them graduated without having missed or failed a year. While many students here have the desire and passion to learn, few can afford the time or money required to educate themselves to the level of a high school graduate. Improving the local high school would give many young adults the access to educational opportunities they deserve.”

The price of one ticket will cover school supplies for one student for an entire academic year.

ALSPIN Book pick: Marley Legend

As a Dj who started with buying vinyl records I have a habit of collecting things that are valuable and worth sharing with others.  So if you ever visit a DJ’s house or apartment you will notice a few things that are common amongst all of us which are sneakers, gadgets, records, hats, DVDs and books.  In this post I want to focus on books and one book in particular.  The book is called Marley Legend and its a great coffee table book on the late reggae singer Bob Marley.

This book has reprints of original flyers, album covers, stickers and letters from the Marley archives.  I recommend it for any serious reggae music lover and Bob Marley fan.  It’s worth the small investment for a piece of history about one of the world’s bobmarley3543musicians.

(R.I.P) DJ AM

It took by complete surprised when I heard that DJ AM passed away in his apartment in NYC.  Almost a year ago he survived a plane crash with drummer Travis Barker and walked away as the only survivors.  I met DJ AM once in Washington DC while I was Deejaying with a friend of mine when he comes from behind and ask if he can “spin” for awhile.  I didn’t hesitate to let him show off his skills and the crowd enjoyed the performance.  His appearances in nightclubs around the world, celebrity parties and festivals will be missed.

I send my condolences to his family and friends.

Here is a great video of DJ AM and Travis Barker performing “Fix your face”
